Manchester City completed the signing of Italian Goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City, on deadline day, completed the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma from PSG. The fee is said to be in the region of €30 million, with add-ons. Manchester City had already signed James Trafford from Burnley, but believe they need experience in post to compete in the league and the Champions League.

Donnarumma

At the end of last season, after winning the treble with Paris Saint-Germain, the French side had made several contract proposals to Donnarumma, expressing desire to keep him at the club on a long term, as his contract was supposed to end in June 2026. However the Goalkeeper refused several attempts by the club to renew his contract. His reason being that he believed he was an integral part of the PSG success last season, so he deserved to be placed on the same salary levels as some of the important players in the team.

The club could not reach an agreement with the Goalkeeper and it became obvious Donnarumma was going to leave the French outfit. Luis Enrique, earlier on before the start of the season, omitted the player’s name from the squad that faced Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup. PSG had also signed his replacement in the shape of Lucas Cavellier, which sent a straight message to Donnarumma that his time at the club was up.

Several clubs lined up for the signing of the goalkeeper. However, his high wages and demands, were enough to push these clubs away. However, Manchester City popped up as the surprised front runners to sign Donnarumma. Despite the arrival of Trafford, it became evident that City will need quality in the post, even as Ederson was looking for a move away from the club to Fernabachè.

The signing of Donnarumma has come as a surprise to many, especially those who have been keen admirers of Pep Guardiola and his work. From the days of Barcelona, Pep has always preferred Goalkeepers who are very good with their feet. He championed this so much that other managers began adapting that preference and approach. However, Donnarumma is a different profile of Goalkeeper from the preference of Pep Guardiola. He is a shot-stopper, who is not a ball playing Goalkeeper like Pep wants.

Donnarumma

He is a goalkeeper who is good at stopping goals, as he posses very strong hands and high anticipation required for a Goalkeeper. He is, however not strong when it comes to using his feet. This move has led most people to raise the question of if Pep Guardiola is about to change his stance and approach, or if this is a panicked buy, especially looking the string of poor performances and errors made by James Trafford.

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of the goalkeeper from PSG. It remains to be seen if he will be able to show his quality and help The Citizens.
