Swedish international, Alexander Isak has finally made his much awaited move to Liverpool on Deadline day.
Isak has finally made his much awaited move to Liverpool after a protracted transfer saga, the became more messy by the day. From missing Newcastle’s preseason, to social media statements and being suspended from first team training to Newcastle’s statement addressing Isaak’s concerns, the saga is now over and Isak will be Liverpool’s new number 9.
Liverpool have signed Alexander Isak on deadline day after finally reaching an agreement with Newcastle United, breaking the British transfer record with a fee of £130 million. This pushes Liverpool’s transfer spend in the summer to around £400 million, which is the highest ever spend in the club’s history.

The transfer saga dragged to the point where the player had to come out with a statement on social media stating his disappointment about Newcastle’s refusal to agree a fee with Liverpool, earlier in the window. He further went on to debunk some statements, which he believes Newcastle have allowed to be circulated in the media putting him in a bad light.
In his statement, he said: “I’m proud to be recognised by my fellow professionals with a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2024/25. First and foremost I want to thank my teammates and everyone at Newcastle United who has supported me along the way. I’m not at the ceremony tonight. With everything going on, it didn’t feel right to be there.
I’ve kept quiet for a long time while others have spoken. That silence has allowed people to push their own version of events, even though they know it doesn’t reflect what was really said and agreed behind closed doors. The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself”.
Following this Newcastle also responded to the player’s statement: “We are disappointed to have been alerted to a social media post by Alexander Isak this evening. We are clear in response that Alex remains under contract and that no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave Newcastle United this summer. We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes and we listen to their views.
As explained to Alex and his representatives, we must always take into consideration the best interests of Newcastle United, the team and our supporters in all decisions and we have been clear that the conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. We do not foresee those conditions being met. This is a proud football club with proud traditions and we strive to retain our family feel. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.”
It became explicitly clear that there was friction between the club and the player, which was assessed as unwholesome, especially with the potential of it affecting the rest of the playing body and team cohesion. Manager Eddie Howe had expressed his desire for the issue to be resolved as soon as possible as the saga was affecting his squad psychologically.
On Deadline day a deal was found with Liverpool for the player. Speaking on the move, Isak said “I feel like this is the next step for me in my career. I’m super-happy that I’ve been given this chance and I’m very motivated to do something well with it. It’s been a long journey to get here. But I’m super-happy to be a part of this team, this club and everything it stands for. It’s something I’m proud of and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m just happy it’s done and that I can get back to work. I’m looking forward to seeing my teammates and the fans, and getting back out there.”

Newcastle however on the transfer, release a 37-word stately about the departure of the striker. This might suggest the extent to which the relationship between club and player had deteriorated to. Club Statement:
Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee.
